What made you decide to work in recruitment?

I wasn’t sure what industry I wanted to work in, but I knew that I wanted to work with people. Recruitment was a great way to speak to people with a range of jobs globally, and at a variety of levels. Helping people in their careers was another reason I chose recruitment, giving people opportunities to work across the world is a great.

Recruitment is a difficult industry to be in. What made you think you would be well suited to succeed?

I enjoy working in a fast-paced environment, and recruitment is certainly fast paced! Seeing the candidates that I have sourced get interviews and start jobs is incredibly satisfying.

Was there something specific which attracted you to Millar Cameron?

Millar Cameron’s focus on Africa caught my attention, but during the interview process I enjoyed my interviews and realised that these are the people I want to be working with. The combination of a fascinating sector and geographies, and a great group of colleagues were the two main reasons.

What is your role at Millar Cameron and which sector do you work in?

I started as a Resourcer in the Agriculture team, and am currently a Consultant in the International Development Sector. I help NGOs, charities, social enterprises and think tanks find mid to senior level staff across the world.

What is your favourite part of the job?

When I see a candidate I have placed update their LinkedIn company and job title I feel very proud. It’s a great feeling to have helped someone find a new job and give them an opportunity to progress in their career. In addition, hearing clients tell me that a candidate I have placed is settling in well and enjoying their job is incredibly satisfying.

What is the difference between working in the industry as compared to what you imagined it would be like?

I didn’t have many expectations when I arrived. I had heard of some recruitment horror stories, such as recruiters sending hundreds of CVs to hiring managers who don’t want to see them, but luckily Millar Cameron isn’t like that at all.

What is your biggest achievement so far on the job?

The second candidate I placed – my client had been trying to fill this role for two years. I am very happy to report that he has been there almost a year and has settled in well, becoming an important member of the company.

What has been your biggest challenge?

The change from Senior Resourcer to Consultant has been a difficult, but incredibly rewarding time. The International Development sector is full of fascinating opportunities!

What piece of advice would you give someone who was thinking of getting into recruitment?

Find a sector that you have an interest in. I grew up between Kigali, Rwanda and a farm in Somerset, so Millar Cameron’s focus on Africa and Agriculture suited me down to the ground.

What is your best tip for working in recruitment?

Don’t be scared to talk to anyone! Liaising with multi-million dollar international businesses was nerve wracking at first, but the rewards have been incredible and speaking to highly respected professionals has been fantastic.

What is the one piece of advice you would give a candidate looking for a new job?

Learn as much as you can from your current job and previous experiences, and think how they can be useful for your next role. I would also suggest adjusting your CV depending on what job you are applying for – make sure the person reading your CV can see why you’d be great at the job!

What are your ambitions at Millar Cameron? What do you want to achieve?

I would like to move into a managerial role and help new Millar Cameron staff achieve greatness.

Apart from recruitment, what else do you do outside of work?

I love to travel. Most recently I went to Morocco, and would love to visit Madagascar in 2018.
