Millar Cameron secures Business Development Manager for African Dairy Programme

Helping a multinational industry NGO identify a Business Development Manager for their development in Uganda.

Heifer International – EADD Programme approached us to assist their recruitment of a Business Development Manager to lead their in-country efforts.

Role location:

The role was based in Uganda with frequent travel across their multiple, in-country sites.

Client company:

Heifer International is a leading NGO that develops sustainable agricultural innovations and equips farmers in challenging environments with the necessary skill-set to become professional, farming communities whilst combating hunger and poverty.

The East African Dairy Development (EADD) programme drives growth of the African dairy sector through the optimisation of herd health and milk yields to improve farm incomes. Educating farmers continuously, the EADD programme is creating sustainable routes to market for smallholder farmers allowing them to compete on the global market.

Challenge

Heifer International generated a new position as they received substantial backing from key donors to progress the EADD programme. 

The internal recruitment team found it challenging to identify Tanzanian nationals that held the necessary experience in the dairy industry. 

Although many candidates had the hands-on, farm production skills, it was more difficult to find candidates with a mixture of business acumen and agricultural awareness that could implement sustainable supply-chains for farmers whilst developing new processing plants and farming cooperatives.

Solution

Millar Cameron started by holding a detailed phone call with key members of Heifer International’s senior management team, ensuring that we understood their desires fully whilst deepening our understanding of their company culture. 

At the end of this call we requested a detailed job description for the position and also agreed a timeline of when we would share our shortlists with them, interview dates and ultimately the intended start date.

Millar Cameron advertised the position on LinkedIn as well as various local and international job boards. 

Our team of consultants and researchers generated a list of similar companies and through LinkedIn, job boards, our vast database and active head hunting, we developed our initial shortlist of candidates. 

We discussed what our client liked and disliked in our profiles and returned to our search to identify several more suitable candidates to share with them. 

Once our client was satisfied with their shortlist we began the interview process. All candidates are debriefed following their interviews, whilst their academic qualifications, payslips, professional and peer references are gathered in the first stages of the interview process. 

When our client makes an offer to their chosen candidate we will discuss and negotiate this where necessary to ensure the optimum outcome is secured for both parties.

We maintain continuous contact with our candidate during their notice period, the days before their start-date and throughout their initial months in their new role.

Results

Millar Cameron successfully found a candidate to fill the position of Business Development Manager within Heifer International’s EADD Programme.

The client received a candidate that matched their desired criteria and shared their ambition to create sustainable farming communities that can reduce poverty and hunger across Africa.
