Director of Utility Innovation

Millar Cameron are supporting the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) with the selection of a Director of Utility Innovation. This position will develop and execute an ambitious strategy to transform utility business models with renewable energy and demand side resources to increase energy service, access, and profitability and decrease cost and CO2 emissions.

The Role

The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (the Alliance) was launched on November 2, 2021 at COP26 with USD10 billion of committed capital to accelerate investment in green energy transitions and renewable energy solutions in developing and emerging economies. This historic partnership leverages catalytic grant funding to unlock investment capital with the aim of mobilizing USD100 billion in public and private capital over the next decade to: reduce carbon, expand access to energy and create inclusive economic growth through jobs. Reduce Carbon: Avoiding or averting over 4 billion tons of greenhouse gases Expand Access: Extending sustainable, reliable, productive-use energy to 1 billion underserved people Create Jobs: Enabling 150 million green jobs that generate inclusive economic growth The Alliance serves as a platform for radical collaborative action and provides grant funding, technical assistance, and a range of financing options and facilities. The Alliance focuses on three types of energy projects:

The Director of Utility Innovation for The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet will work in close partnership with the Managing Director of Applied Innovation to develop and execute an ambitious strategy to transform utility business models with renewable energy and demand side resources to increase energy service, access, and profitability and decrease cost and CO2 emissions. These utilities will primarily be in low- and middle-income countries (initial focus on Nigeria and India) but insight for their transformation will likely be derived from global experience.
The Director will also support the Applied Innovation team’s broader work to drive down the cost of and increase the adoption of renewable technologies (including energy production, storage, etc.) and associated business models through data, hardware, and
business model innovation.
To develop and execute an ambitious utility innovation strategy powered by renewables
  • Co-develop and execute a three-year strategy for the Applied Innovation team with regional teams in Africa and Asia to collaborate with utilities to increase the service they provide and lower their cost and emissions by leveraging renewables, energy efficiency, and associated business models
  • Use deep existing experience in and understanding of the space to create, curate, and share a portfolio of global utility innovations that enable lower cost, better service, and lower emission power with the alliance (including distributed and utility-scale generation, storage, and demand side resources) and work to adapt and deploy these innovations in specific countries
  • Collaborate with the Director of Projects to oversee the rapid roll-out projects to demonstrate and scale applied utility innovation on the ground
  • Assess new opportunities and make choices based on alignment to the strategy, potential for impact, and execution ability of partners
Build the alliance’s renewable utility innovation function and capacity
  • Advise senior management, colleagues, and partners on choices related to renewable technology-enabled utility innovation
  • Work effectively with other alliance teams (e.g., the finance team, regional teams, etc.) and partners to leverage expertise from across the alliance
  • Supervise an Associate and others, as needed, to build a cohesive, highperforming team
  • Establish a strong network across the sector and act as a senior alliance representative for Applied Innovation; build and maintain the alliance’s thought leadership through publications and speaking opportunities
