Estate General Manager

Our client is a rapidly expanding fresh produce business with operations throughout East Africa. They require an Estate General Manager to be based on their farm in Central Kenya.

The Role

They will oversee all farm operations and assure optimal farm efficiency from a compliance and certifications perspective. They will be responsible for the management of the Estate security at all times.

The incumbent must have strong horticultural production experience with specialisation in either exotic vegetables, avacado or rose farming. They must also have strong people management skills and solid farm infrastructure management capabilities to ensure proper maintenance of the buildings, roads, dams, machinery etc.

The incumbent will report directly to the board of directors and will have 8 senior managers reporting to them, with indirect supervision of the 500+ staff below them.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Security and Infrastructure
Manage Security across all Sites within the Farm
Manage fencing and fence maintenance
Manage road and road maintenance ( especially Drainage)

2. Site Administration
Manage senior section staff on a daily, operational basis – Veg. Nursery, Elite Plants EPZ, Security, Veg Farm Mangers, Roses Farm Manager etc.- ensuring operations/projects are progressing on track
Coordinate all customer/Audit site visits
Manager all Record keeping for the site

3. People Management
Ensure disciplined employee attendance across the Site and that the number of staff in the books tally with physical counts
Oversee management of workshop staff i.e. allocation of duties
Maintain staff discipline and welfare in accordance with company policy

4. Irrigation
Ensure equipment breakdown is kept to an absolute minimum
Assure Dam maintenance and maximum water retention levels
Power and Solar management to ensure they are operational (liaise with KPLC)

5. Workshop & Stores Management
Ensure support systems not directly related to field production (buses, trucks, small vehicles tractors…) are fully functional
Ensure vehicle downtime is kept to an absolute minimum
Coordinate the movement of any heavy plant machinery between Sites

6. Health and Safety
Ensure adherence to compliance and standard measures
Participate at Farm Welfare Committee Meetings

Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the immediate supervisor, manager or senior management.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):

Efficient Utilities management (Power Factor for entire site must be maintained above 0.9)
Respect Budget set, communicating where discrepancies may occur and solutions available
Ensure senior management team is meeting budget in terms of labour, expenditure
Complete tasks within stipulated timelines
Complete regular Analytical reporting, meeting strict deadlines
Mentor key senior level / section leaders
Retention of Senior staff

Reporting Metrics

Daily- Check machinery and irrigation equipment is in good working order with any
issues promptly addressed and communicated
Weekly- Send Weekly Report to the Board of Directors
Monthly- Prepare documented monthly energy consumption budgets to ensure that
the business is not invoiced any unnecessary fees such as KPLC’s Power Factor Surcharge
Quarterly - Strategic presentation at Senior Management Meeting at Head Office
Half-Yearly- Budget presentation
Annual- TBC

Key Competencies:
Educated to Degree level in Agriculture, Engineering with a strong management background. or relevant field, ideally with technical operations background preferably in the horticultural domain
10+ years of experience in Farm Management ideally with experience in multi crop sites.
Hands-on experience in machinery and farm equipment operations
Sound people management skills and ability to maintain good team discipline
Excellent communication and organization skills
High integrity and a good understanding of Agriculture and Agricultural standards
Ability to make sound business decision and recommendations
