The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is a global organisation dedicated to promoting responsible forest management. Through its standards, certification system and international network, FSC brings together environmental, social and economic interests to support forests and the communities and businesses that depend on them.
The assignment
FSC appointed Millar Cameron to lead the search for its Regional Director for Latin America.
The Regional Director would serve as FSC’s principal representative in the region while contributing to the organisation’s Global Leadership Team. The appointment required someone able to translate global priorities into a clear regional strategy and represent Latin American perspectives within FSC’s international decision-making.
The remit extended beyond regional representation. It brought together organisational leadership, operational and financial oversight, stakeholder engagement, market development and partnership building across a highly decentralised international network.
What the role required
Success depended on influence rather than traditional command-and-control leadership. FSC’s work across Latin America is delivered through autonomous Network Partners and relationships spanning businesses, governments, civil society and other international stakeholders.
The successful candidate therefore needed to build trust, align differing perspectives and create momentum around shared priorities while respecting local context and organisational independence.
The brief called for an experienced senior leader who could:

Fluency in Spanish and English was essential, alongside a strong understanding of Latin American contexts, stakeholder dynamics and institutional environments.
The outcome
Millar Cameron successfully supported FSC in completing this appointment, securing a candidate whose regional and international experience aligned with the strategic, operational and stakeholder requirements of the role.
