ABOUT
EFT Corporation, a leading payment solutions provider with operations across multiple African markets, was entering a new phase of strategic growth. To support this expansion and strengthen its financial leadership, the business sought to appoint a Group Chief Financial Officer.
The CFO would be responsible for transitioning financial responsibilities from the Founder and embedding the structure, discipline, and oversight needed to scale effectively.
The right candidate would need to combine deep financial expertise with a nuanced understanding of Africa’s fintech ecosystem and the realities of cross-border operations.
THE CHALLENGE
The client was looking for a rare blend of capabilities:
- A proven track record of leading finance functions in fast-growing, complex environments.
- Experience working alongside Founders and Boards, ideally in both public and private settings.
- First-hand knowledge of African markets and cross-border payment infrastructures.
- A leadership style that balances strategic vision with operational and financial discipline.
This was a high-impact, high-visibility role requiring a candidate who could step into the function seamlessly and guide the company through its next stage of growth.

OUR APPROACH
We began by mapping the fintech and payments landscape across Africa, with a particular focus on South Africa, to identify potential CFOs who had operated at the intersection of finance, technology, and high-growth markets.
Our process included:
- In-depth interviews to understand each candidate’s career trajectory, leadership approach, and technical expertise.
- Assessment of cultural fit, with a focus on the ability to collaborate with Founders and embed structure within entrepreneurial environments.
- Expanding the search into the broader tech ecosystem to ensure a comprehensive view of available talent.
Shortlisted candidates were evaluated against both technical and cultural criteria, and the final stages of the process included interviews with the senior leadership team, plus face-to-face meetings with the Board.
THE OUTCOME
The successful candidate brought a wealth of experience across finance, banking, and technology. This included leadership roles within UK-listed businesses, South African firms, and private equity-backed tech companies - many of which had experienced rapid scaling.
