The Role

About the role

Reporting to regional leadership, the role leads the Romanian team, manages public and private sector relationships, expands forest management certification, and represents FSC nationally in line with global goals.

The ideal candidate is a strategic, adaptable leader with strong knowledge of the local political and regulatory landscape. They will manage a small team, build trusted stakeholder partnerships, and engage government effectively to advance FSC’s mission—fostering an inclusive, collaborative culture while ensuring strategic and operational success.

Key dimensions of the role

The National Representative, based in Romania, will have responsibilities including, but not limited to:

  • Provide strategic leadership and hands-on support to a small team, fostering professional growth and a culture of collaboration and accountability.
  • Develop, present, and implement a comprehensive country strategy aligned with FSC’s global mission, monitoring progress and adapting to changing market and stakeholder dynamics.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with government agencies, environmental NGOs, industry players, and forest owners to promote FSC’s interests.
  • Use diplomatic skills to navigate complex stakeholder landscapes, manage conflicting interests, and build consensus.
  • Oversee the promotion, implementation, and credibility of FSC forest management certification in Romania, coordinating with technical experts to ensure standards are met.
  • Manage the country office budget and resources efficiently, ensuring compliance with FSC policies, procedures, and reporting requirements.
  • Represent FSC Romania at external meetings, conferences, and forums, advocating for sustainable forest management aligned with FSC principles.
  • Collaborate with FSC international teams and other country offices to share best practices and support global objectives.

Skills and experience

The desired candidate will have, but not be limited to:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • 10+ years’ professional experience, including 4+ years in leadership.
  • Experience in membership or network management, preferably in nonprofit/mission-driven sectors.
  • Strong analytical skills to develop actionable strategies.
  • Proven leadership of small teams and country strategy implementation.
  • Diplomatic negotiation skills engaging with government, industry, and civil society.
  • Budget management experience.
  • Ability to manage projects and deliver results independently.
  • Familiarity with certification systems (FSC, ISO, Fairtrade) is a plus.
  • Understanding of service-based business models is advantageous.
  • Excellent communication skills for diverse audiences.
  • Skilled in fostering collaboration across cultures and managing diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to build inclusive, high-performing teams.
  • Highly motivated, flexible, and pragmatic problem solver.
  • Experience in multicultural, multilingual global teams.
  • Fluency in Romanian and strong English proficiency.
