The Role

Green Resources AS is East Africa’s largest forest development and wood processing company, managing approximately 38,000 hectares of plantation forest across Mozambique, Tanzania, and Uganda. The company operates several industrial facilities, including two sawmills, three pole treatment plants, and a veneer plant. Established in 1995, Green Resources is a private Norwegian company owned by New Forests’ Africa Forestry Impact Platform (AFIP).

About the role

The core responsibility of this role is to develop structured (financial) models in Excel and other tools to be used for analysis and decision support. These tasks will be undertaken against the following areas:

Valuation Work

  • Building forestry/resource models for strategic planning by developing standardised analytics processes for the optimisation of forestry and industrial cash flows for subsidiaries.
  • Work with consultants to develop the annual Biological Asset Valuation and Business Enterprise Valuation models (taking inputs from actuals, forecasts and budgets).

Budgets

  • Develop, maintain and expand on (existing) subsidiary and group models for the purpose of Budgets.
  • Update budget models throughout the reporting period (Actuals, Forecasts and Budgets).
  • Integrate 5-Year Planting and Harvesting Plan into budgets.

Investments

  • Develop models to support Investment Decisions (Capex or Others).

Subsidiary Operations

  • Provide training and support to Subsidiary Teams in terms of analysis of Tender Documents and bids.
  • Provide training and support to Subsidiary Teams in relation to use of various business models and budgets.
  • Liaise with Finance & Subsidiary Teams to ensure all necessary input data is available for models.

Reporting

  • Contribute to the continual improvement of management reporting framework and work with external IT service providers to continuously upgrade the reporting frameworks for best insights.
  • Periodic and/or Ad-hoc reporting to investors and lenders.

Key dimensions of the role

As a Data and Reporting Analyst at GRAS, you will play a crucial role in collecting, analyzing, presenting and reporting data to support strategic decision-making and improve operational  efficiency within our forestry and industrial operations. You will collaborate with various stakeholders, including company leadership, industrial and forestry managers and environmental specialists, to extract insights from complex data sets, produce reports and present actionable recommendations. This position requires a strong analytical mindset, exceptional attention to detail, and proficiency in data analysis and reporting tools.

Skills and qualifications

  • Bachelor or Masters Degree in a related discipline (Data Analytics/Science or Natural Resource Management) and/or Undergraduate degree in Forestry/Forest Science/Natural Sciences.
  • Strong analytical ability, with demonstrated experience in natural resource management, carbon or sustainability analysis.
  • Experience with reporting for valuation/management purposes.
  • Understanding of general forestry principles such as land clearing, planting, silviculture and harvesting.
  • Familiarity with financial modelling concepts including discounted cash flow analysis, financial statements, and internal rate of return.
  • Highly proficient with MS software (i.e., excel, word, access).
  • Ability to interpret and understand Excel Financial Modelling.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Willingness and ability to routinely travel throughout Africa, including in remote areas.
  • An ability to work independently & take ownership of a role.
  • Diplomacy & capable of maintaining composure under pressure.

(Preferred) Additional Skills

  • Knowledge of forest mensuration and biometrics.
  • Understanding of forest estate optimization and planning tools such as Tigermoth GIS skills (ArcGIS/Manifold/Mapinfo, etc.).
  • Familiarity with sustainable forest management standards (i.e., FSC, PEFC).
  • Experience with Power Platform is preferred but not essential including Power Query, Dataflows, App development and integration into Power BI, and power automate flows definition and integration.
