We sat down with London-based Senior Consultant, Hamish, to learn more about his career, why he chose Millar Cameron, and what he sees as the biggest opportunities within the Technology, Industry, and Infrastructure sectors for the upcoming year.
What’s your current role at Millar Cameron?
I am a Senior Consultant in the Millar Cameron team, advising and partnering clients on leadership and key person search and selection assignments across the technology, industry, and infrastructure market segments. I then directly approach, qualify, interview, and assess candidates for said assignments.
Why executive search? What led you to a career in this space?
Executive search is an interesting career because it combines intellectual rigour with curiosity for how companies work and what makes people tick. You learn something new in every conversation, whether it's about culture, career paths, job functions, or simple industry gossip. To work with such interesting leaders is a privilege.
ABOUT MILLAR CAMERON
What made you choose Millar Cameron?
Whilst it is slightly tone-deaf to refer to 54 countries and over 3000 tribal groups as “Africa” working across the Continent has given me a real appreciation of the dynamism and optimism as well the positive attitude people have in order to get things done in challenging circumstances. There are real challenges to overcome, one of the main ones is getting the right people with the right skills, in the right situation, in the right company. And so I am happy to contribute to that.
Recruiting for senior management, director and C-suite positions requires a unique skill set. How do you prepare your candidates for the recruitment process at this level?
The value we add is in really understanding our client's cultures, business drivers, and current situation, giving us a more complete understanding of the requirements of the role and what our candidates will be tasked with. Therefore we can advise the clients to reflect on that against their own experience for a more detailed and compelling conversation with the client.
ABOUT THE SECTOR
What do you see as the biggest recruitment opportunity and conversely challenge, currently playing out within the technology, infrastructure, and industry space over the next 12 months?
It does seem that across technology, infrastructure, and industry you are seeing the effects of the war in Ukraine and the vast increase in strength of the USD as opposed to local currencies, rise in interest rates, and global uncertainty start to wain after a difficult two years. In logistics and infrastructure we are seeing significant growth in ports. In technology we continue to see data centre companies expand with the growth in demand for cloud services, satellite companies compete for market share and exciting disruptors such as Starlink.
